Did you know...
Pronounced “PAIR-uh-doe", and also known as “Olivine”, it is sometimes found in volcanic areas, while some are found embedded in meteorites. The Canary Islands, China, Brazil, Norway, Hawaii 🌴, Australia, Brazil and South Africa provide the finest gem quality peridot stones.
Known as the stone of compassion, peridot is believed to bring good health, restful sleep and peace to relationships by balancing emotions and mind. This friendly bright green stone also has the uncanny ability to inspire eloquence and creativity; it also brings delight and good cheer. It attracts love and calms anger by giving renewal to all things.
The shade and depth of green color present in peridot is dependent on the proportion of iron present in the stone, and the deeper the green, the smaller the amount of iron that is present.
The ‘Green Sand Beach' on the Big Island of Hawaii, officially known as Papakōlea, is carved from a 49,000 year old cinder cone belonging to the Mauna Loa volcano 🌋that contains the green crystals (olivines) that give the beach its name. I was lucky enough to visit this beautiful beach a few years ago!! It’s is truly beautiful, but if you do the hike (as opposed to letting the locals take you over bumpy – and I mean bumpy! – terrain), take plenty of water and plan for a hot day! Not a lot of shade on this hike!
Care & Cleaning
- To clean Peridot jewelry, soak pieces briefly in a solution of warm water and gentle dish detergent.
- Peridot is sensitive to heat, acids, ammonia, and hot waters.
- Use a soft brush to clean around the setting and restore the gem’s luster.
- Be sure that Peridot is never subjected to ultrasonic or steam cleaning, as these methods can easily damage the gemstone.
